Dr. Merritt J. Norvell, Jr. is an executive vice president and the managing director of DHR's Lansing, Mich. office. He is also the global leader of DHR's Education Practice.
Dr. Norvell brings to the executive search community more than 49 years of unique and diverse leadership, ranging from the IBM Corporation to higher education administration and executive search. He has developed a successful executive search and consulting practice in the education sector, where his searches have ranged from presidents, provosts, deans, directors, to coaches, athletic directors and to other campus executives. In addition, he has conducted successful senior-level searches in the areas of information technology, human resources, board services, diversity, nonprofits and intercollegiate athletics. Some of his clients are Alliant Energy Corp., The University of Virginia, Tulane University, Notre Dame University, Western Carolina University, Temple University, United States Olympic Committee, The National Basketball Association, University of Vermont, SUNY at Albany, The Piney Woods School, Ball State University and the NCAA. Dr. Norvell spent 18 years in a variety of executive leadership positions in the IBM Corporation, which included Academic Information Systems (ACIS) where he was national manager of market support services and collegiate merchandising programs manager. He has also been an assistant dean of the Graduate School Administration and assistant vice chancellor for student affairs at The University of Wisconsin. After retiring from IBM, he became the director of intercollegiate athletics at Michigan State University where he was responsible for the leadership of the nation's 16th largest intercollegiate athletic program.
Dr. Norvell is also the president and principal of TNG and Associates, a sports consulting and services company. Through TNG he lectures and consults with some of the country's most visible and respected colleges, universities, and programs such as the NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males, the NCAA Football Coaching Academies, the Black Coaches Association's Professional Development Program (ACE), the Division 1A Athletic Directors Association, and The Minority Opportunities Athletic Association, Inc., Cardinal Advisors, and The Copious Sports Information Network. He has served in a variety of leadership roles on community and academic boards, such as the University of Wisconsin – Madison Athletic Board, Alumni Board, and School of Business Advisory Board; United Negro College Fund, NCAA Budget and Finance Cabinet, Big Ten Conference Budget Committee, and as chair of the Madison Urban League Board, Wisconsin Special Olympics and Madison Wisconsin Community Foundation Boards.
He is a member of the 1962 University of Wisconsin Big Ten Championship and 1963 Rose Bowl football team, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, 100 Black Men, Inc., Rotary International and Capital City Masonic Lodge. He earned his Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctorate degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is married and the father of two sons. < Read less
