Philip DeFord is a partner in the St. Louis office and focuses on the financial service sector, and has worked extensively with private equity firms to help them find senior management and talent for their own needs as well as their investee companies. Philip also has extensive Asian experience.
Prior to joining DHR in 2009, Philip was an integral member of the banking, finance, private equity, and corporate development practices at Boyden in Singapore. In this role for 5 years, Philip placed a number of senior bankers as well as corporate Chief Executive Officers and Chief Financial Officers. Philip spent 26 years in Asia, most of the time working for major financial institutions including Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein ("DrKW") in Singapore where he was a Managing Director responsible for syndications and debt origination. Prior to moving overseas, he was in the corporate bank at Chase handling a portfolio of large companies in the aerospace and capital goods industries.
In addition to the financial services experience, Philip also served as Chief Financial Officer of a garment trading company in Hong Kong. The company traded and manufactured product in a number of markets. This experience significantly enhanced his understanding of the dynamics of a global enterprise.
Philip has extensive experience in direct investment, having been involved at both Security Pacific and DrKW in the establishment of direct investment funds. Additionally, he served as a director of the Philippine Long Term Equity Fund, which was a direct investment fund operating in the Philippines. Philip was also an Independent Director of a publicly listed company in Singapore.
Philip is involved in a number of civic and professional organizations in St. Louis. He is currently on the board in the World Affairs Council and the Advisory Board of the Boeing Institute of International Business at the Cook School at St. Louis University. Philip is also an active member of the Association for Corporate Growth and acts as a judge for the Olin Cup at the Skandalaris Center at Washington University.
Philip feels his background working both in the US and overseas, working both on the banking side and the corporate side of the table, and involvement on the boards of both public and not for profit corporations gives him a wide range of experience. This experience allows him to work with companies and individuals to be a trusted advisor and to find great solutions.
Philip graduated from Colby College in Waterville, Maine with a Bachelor of Arts and has an MBA from Stern School at New York University. < Read less
