The firm Syracuse University has hired to help select its next athletic director has recently assisted schools with far different resource pools devoted to athletics.
Hiring a search firm will usually come with a six-figure price tag, and the practice has become the norm in college athletics.
Syracuse has retained Glenn Sugiyama and Pat Richter, of DHR International's Sports Practice Group, to consult on profile development, recruitment and selection of an experienced candidate.
The school has said it expects to have a new athletic director in place by the fall semester.
Here is a brief snapshot at other searches the firm has assisted:
Outgoing athletic director: Paul Dee left Miami in 2008 and later became chair of the NCAA's Committee on Infractions.
New hire: Kirby Hocutt, who spent four years as Miami's athletic director before taking the same position at Texas Tech.
Notable: Hocutt's time in Coral Gables was brief, and his tenure also overlapped with significant NCAA violations related to the Nevin Shapiro case.
Outgoing athletic director: Jack Graham was fired in August because his vision for the athletic department did not align with the president's.
New hire: Joe Parker was hired last month after previously serving as deputy athletic director at Texas Tech. Parker had also been Washington State's director of annual giving from 1998-2000 and director of the Sooner Club at Oklahoma from 2000-03.
Outgoing athletic director: Chris Del Conte, who left to become athletic director at TCU.
New hire: Rick Greenspan, the former athletic director at Indiana who oversaw the hiring of former coach Kelvin Sampson.
Notable: Greenspan's three-year tenure at Rice saw significant facility upgrades but was also marred by allegations he made discriminatory remarks toward a former Iranian basketball player. An internal investigation found those claims unfounded.
Outgoing athletic director: Steve Pederson, who was fired in December after former football coach Paul Chryst accepted the head coaching job at Wisconsin.
New hire: Pitt expects to have a list of candidates in front of its committee in early April, with the search expected to be completed by the end of June.
Outgoing athletic director: Richard Regan, who resigned in 2013 after serving as athletic director since 1998.
New hire: Nate Pine, previously the deputy athletic director at Maryland.
- Jim Harbaugh at Stanford (football)
- Randy Edsall at Maryland (football)
- Johnny Dawkins at Stanford (men's basketball)
